Peter Bruce Gunn, the founder of our firm, began practicing as a criminal defence lawyer in Edmonton, Alberta in 1972. He quickly developed a reputation for being a powerful advocate. In the 1980s, it became apparent that he had a gift for impaired driving cases. Bruce had keen insight into the scientific and mechanical workings of the instruments and devices used in blood-alcohol testing, as well as a limitless imagination which was put to good use in inventing new defences.
His daughter Shannon joined him in 2001 and shared her father’s enthusiasm for the law. Shannon, along with the other lawyers in the office, ensures that the legal tradition started by the Gunn family in 1897 continues.
The firm has changed its name a number of times over its long history. Gunn Prithipaul Nelson and Strong became Gunn & Prithipaul, which in turn became Gunn Prithipaul & Hatch. The one constant has always been “Gunn”. While the firm grows and develops, we strive to stay true to Bruce Gunn’s style of fearless and ethical advocacy. Gunn Law Group reflects our history but also our future.
Gunn Law Group only accepts criminal cases. In addition, we are particularly known for our vigorous defence of those charged with alcohol-related driving offences. This is a highly specialized area of the law. The skills in cross-examination and trial preparation which our lawyers have acquired through impaired driving cases have made us effective advocates in the past for those charged with other offences such as murder, aggravated assault, forgery, theft, etc.
We operate mainly on the basis of private retainers. We do occasionally accept Legal Aid files, as well. We are committed to serving our community and try to accommodate those who have serious financial limitations.
